During the nights of Saturday and Sunday, ‘quite good observation conditions for auroras can be expected in Austria’. This was announced by Geosphere Austria (formerly the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, ZAMG) on Facebook and Instagram on Friday. The social media channels said the sun is active again and has emitted at least four solar storms in the past few days, which are on their way to Earth and will arrive on Friday evening.
In large parts of the country, it will be slightly cloudy or clear on Friday evening; only in southern Styria and Lower Carinthia will there be clouds at the beginning, but the sky should also clear up here during the night, the meteorologists expect. Visibility should be similarly good on Sunday night.
However, estimating how strong the geomagnetic storm will be with several interacting solar storms is difficult, as emphasized in Geosphere. However, the predicted speeds of around 600 to 900 kilometres per second indicate that northern lights should be possible in Central Europe.
